My name is Lucky, but I haven't always been lucky. I was born with only three legs and was abandoned on the street. I was only a few weeks old, and life was very harsh. Naughty children threw stones at me. Stray dogs and cats bullied me. I survived because I ate everything that I could find and learned to defend myself. Like all the others, though, I was afraid of dogcatchers. An old dog told me, "If you see them, run away fast."
One day, my nightmare became reality. I saw some food in a big box on a street corner. I ran up to the box excitedly. Unfortunately, the box turned out to be a cage, and the door was locked as I was eating inside it. I was trembling with fear. Soon I was taken to a dog shelter. There, many dogs like me were kept in small cages. Some dogs suffered from health problems such as skin diseases. I also heard that we would get fixed so we couldn't have babies. If no one adopted us, we would be released back onto the streets. The baby thing was sad, but it didn't bother me a lot. I couldn't stop thinking about the crazy life back on the streets. However, I never imagined there would be anyone coming for me.
Just before I was due to return to the streets, my luck changed for the better. Lottie, who was a young girl, came to the shelter. At first, I was scared of her because she looked like one of the cruel kids from the neighborhood. Lottie looked around at all the dogs before she walked straight to my cage. I noticed that she had only one leg. Lottie picked me up and hugged me tightly. "We are a perfect match!" she said and decided to take me home.
It took me some time to adapt to my new life, but my sad memories as a stray have been replaced by happy ones. Lottie is warm and caring. She feeds me, bathes me, and remembers to take me for a walk every day. She gave me my current name because she said that we were lucky to have each other.
