Cool sneakers!!
Yeah. Guess what they're made from.
No idea. Tell me.
They're made from garbage taken from the ocean.
Do you also find it hard to believe that sneakers can be made from ocean garbage? Maybe this fact has made you think of the serious issue of plastic pollution in the world's oceans. The growing amount of plastic garbage is a threat to marine animals, the ocean environment, and the whole planet. That's why more and more people are trying to do something about it. Instead of dumping plastic trash, they are finding new uses for it.
Some companies are using recycled plastic in their products, for example. Many products are being manufactured with at least some recycled plastic content now. They include such diverse items as sneakers, sunglasses, computer equipment and clothes. One well-known maker of sports clothing uses old fishing nets in its latest jackets. Also, a top computer company has brought out a new laptop. It contains recycled plastic that was collected from beaches. Bracelets, bottles, and hair and beauty products have also been made from plastic trash which was washed ashore by the ocean.
Speaking of "Washed Ashore," that is the name of a community arts project in Oregon. It was set up in 2010. Washed Ashore members create beautiful sculptures and displays from garbage they have collected at seaside locations. That's because they want to raise public awareness of pollution and encourage consumers to change their habits. Artists and groups around the world have followed in their footsteps. In Melbourne Zoo, in Australia, for example, there was recently an exhibition of marine animal and fish sculptures made entirely from trash.
These companies and artists are working hard to reduce ocean plastic, which they hope will make a difference. The ocean is the source of life on this planet. It produces 50% of the oxygen we breathe and helps regulate the climate. Almost all the rain that falls on land comes from the sea, too. The American marine biologist and author Sylvia Earle summed up its importance in a few simple words. "No water, no life. No blue, no green," she said. We can all help clean up this mess, but it will take more than just buying a pair of sneakers.
