This majestic building is the face of the Tokyo National Museum. Built in 1937, it unites a European structure with a Japanese roof in "Imperial Crown" style. Architect Watanabe Jin's design was selected from an open call for submissions.
A marble staircase forms a dramatic centerpiece. Classic-figured balustrades, stained glass and lighting revive the essence of a bygone era. Tile mosaics and a garden view make this lounge a hidden gem.
Upstairs, the "Highlights of Japanese Art" exhibition is ideal for first-time visitors. Artworks form a timeline through Japanese history, from 10,000 BC to early modern times. The National Treasure Gallery features a different National Treasure on a near-monthly basis.
Downstairs, genre exhibits include striking Buddhist sculpture, sumptuously decorated lacquerware, metalwork vessels, ornaments and ritual objects, exquisitely crafted Japanese swords and sword guards, and an array of ceramics and modern art.
