Hey there, Head Squeezers! I hope you're well. So, it's time for me to answer another one of your questions, and the lucky person today is Sam Lane on YouTube, who asks, "Why do we have eyebrows?"
Well, Sam, of course our eyebrows are one of the most expressive nonverbal forms of communication we have—from eyebrows down, because we're feeling angry, to one up, because you're quizzical and wondering about something. Now in a bid to be pretty, people pluck their eyebrows, they trim them, they preen them, and that is just the guys.
But the question is, why do we actually have them in the first place? Great video from James on this one actually, which we'll put up at the end of this one, all about looking at whether human evolution is complete or not. So it's down to evolution over the millennia; we've lost lots of our body hair. And due to natural selection, our eyebrows remain, and the main reason is for protection.
Now if you think about it, if you're out on a run and you're sweating profusely, or if it's absolutely chucking it down, then that nice arch shape of your eyebrow deflects the rain or the sweat along down your temples and keeps it out of your eyes. Perfect. Not too useful if you're caught in sideways rain, which we do tend to get hit in the UK a lot.
Give us a thumbs-up if you've been caught in rain and your eyebrows have done absolutely nothing to save your eyes.
Interestingly, some researchers think that if we didn't evolve to keep hair there as eyebrows, we would have another form of protection for our eyes. Maybe extra long eyelashes would have worked, or maybe a huge forehead, kind of like a shelf to protect our eyes, just like our Neanderthal ancestors.
Anyway, that's all the time I've got for right now. Please do keep sending in your questions—Twitter, Facebook, or below. Until next time, stay quizzical. Need to work on that. Happy Head Squeezing!
