"Me," "myself," and "I"—you may be tempted to use these words interchangeably because they all refer to the same thing. But in fact, each one has a specific role in a sentence. "I" is a subject pronoun, "me" is an object pronoun, and "myself" is a reflexive or intensive pronoun. So what does that reveal about where each word belongs?
Me(我)、myself(我自己)和 I(我)--你可能會想交替使用這些字,因為它們指的是一樣的東西。不過事實上,那每個字在句子裡都有特定作用。I(我)是主格代名詞、me(我)是受格代名詞,myself(我自己)則是反身或強調代名詞。那麼,對於每個字所屬的位置,那說明了什麼呢?
Let's start with the difference between subject and object. Imagine the subject as the actor in a sentence and the object as the word that is acted upon. "I invited her, but she invited me." The object can also be the object of a preposition. "She danced around me, while he shimmied up to me."
先從主格和受格的差異開始說起。想像主格是句子中的行為者,而受格則是接受動作的那個字。「我(I)邀請她,但她邀請我(me)。」受格也可以作介係詞的受詞。「她在我(me)身邊跳舞,而他則朝著我(me)舞動而來。」
In some languages, like Latin and Russian, most nouns have different forms that distinguish subjects from objects. However, in English, that's only true of pronouns. But so long as you know how to distinguish subjects from objects, you can figure out what belongs where.
在有些語言中,像是拉丁文和俄文,大部分名詞擁有不同形態來區分主格和受格。不過英文中,只有代名詞是那樣。但只要你知道怎麼分辨主格和受格,你就能弄清楚什麼要放哪。
And when you encounter a more complicated sentence, say, one that involves multiple subjects or objects, and you're not sure whether to use "I" or "me," just temporarily eliminate the other person, and once again, distinguish subject from object. Here's another. You wouldn't say, "Me heard gossip," but sub in "I" and you're good to go.
而當你遇到一個比較複雜的句子,好比說,一句裡有多個主格或受格,你不確定該用 I 還是 me,只要暫時把另一個人去掉,然後再一次,區分主格和受格。舉另一個例子。你不會說「我(me)聽到謠言」,不過換成 I 就沒問題了。
Then, what about "myself"? This grand character is often substituted for "me" and "I" because it seems more impressive. "Please tell Jack or myself" may sound elegant, but in fact, "me" is the right pronoun here. So where should you use "myself"? In its function as a reflexive pronoun, "myself" only works if it's the object of a sentence whose subject is "I." "I consider myself the most important pronoun at this year's party."
那麼 myself 呢?這個偉大的角色常被用來替換 me 和 I,因為它看起來似乎比較厲害。「請告訴 Jack 或我自己(myself)」可能聽起來很文雅,但事實上,me 在這才是正確的代名詞。那麼 myself 應該用在哪呢?作反身代名詞時,myself 只有在句子主格是 I,而它是句中受格的情況下才對。「我(I)認為我自己(myself)是今年派對上最重要的代名詞。」
"Myself" can also add emphasis as an intensive pronoun. "I myself have heard others agree." The sentence works without it, but that extra pronoun gives it oomph. To check if "myself" belongs in a sentence, simply ensure that there's also an "I" that it's reflecting or intensifying.
Myself 當強調代名詞也可以加強語氣。「我(I)自己(myself)就有聽到其他人同意。」這句話沒有 myself 也可以,不過那另外加的代名詞讓句子更為有力。要檢查 myself 是不是屬於某個句子,只要確保句中還有個 myself 反映或強調的 I 就行了。
So that's "me," "myself," and "I," ever ready to represent "you," "yourself" and..."you."
這就是 me(我)、myself(我自己)和 I(我),隨時準備好當 you(你)、yourself(你自己)和...you(你)的代言人。
