Hey! Do you know how to use the indefinite article? You know, "a" and "an." Well, "a" and "an" come before countable nouns. A countable noun is—drum roll, please—a noun that can be counted!
嘿!你知道怎麼用不定冠詞嗎?你知道,就是 a 和 an。這個嘛,a 和 an 出現在可數名詞前。可數名詞就是--鼓聲請下--可以被數的名詞!
Observe: One cat, two cats, three cats; one book, two books, three books; one elephant, two elephants, three elephants; one apple, two apples, three apples. Both "a" and "an" are used with countable nouns that are singular. Both "a" and "an" are used with singular countable nouns that have not been mentioned before and are therefore new to the listener or speaker.
請看:一隻貓、兩隻貓、三隻貓;一本書、兩本書、三本書;一隻大象、兩隻大象、三隻大象;一顆蘋果、兩顆蘋果、三顆蘋果。冠詞 a 和 an 都是搭配「單數可數名詞」使用。冠詞 a 和 an 兩者搭配先前沒被提過的單數名詞,因此那些名詞對聽眾和講者來說是沒聽過的。
"Look!" Jimmy cried in delight. "A cat and an elephant!" This information is new and has not been mentioned before. As such, "a" or "an" must be used.
「看!」吉米開心地大喊。「一隻貓和一隻大象!」這則資訊是新的,而且之前未曾被提過。這樣一來,就一定得用 a 或 an。
The indefinite article "a" precedes singular countable nouns that begin with a consonant sound: a cat, a book, a hat, a toy, a mouse.
不定冠詞 a 位在以「子音為首」的單數可數名詞前:一隻貓、一本書、一頂帽子、一個玩具、一隻老鼠。
The indefinite article "an" precedes singular countable nouns that begin with a vowel sound: an apple, an elephant, an igloo, an octopus, an umbrella.
不定冠詞 an 位在以「母音為首」的單數可數名詞前:一顆蘋果、一隻大象、一間冰屋、一隻章魚、一把傘。
