Consumer alert tonight for those of you thinking about participating in the "secret sister gift exchange" that's going around Facebook.
It sounds harmless—buy one gift for 10 bucks, and in return, you're supposed to get 36 gifts sent to you. But, the entire deal has red flags all over it. Consumer Investigator Bryan Anderson is here to explain this one for us.
What's that saying that if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is? Well, this gift exchange can actually get you kicked off of Facebook for joining what a lot of people say is a pyramid scheme. Even worse, the United States Postal Service considers this kind of thing illegal.
Search Facebook for "secret sister gift exchange" and you'll find people posting and reposting this message. It claims you can buy a gift for 10 dollars or more, add your name to a list and a bounty of 36 gifts will come your way.
A lot of friends are doing it or at least posting about it, so...
But you're smart enough to not get involved, hopefully?
Doesn't sound like a good idea.
Lauren Kidwell says "secret sister" sounds a whole lot like a pyramid scheme she saw years ago.
Lauren Kidwell
You only spend 10 dollars, get one gift for someone else, and everybody else sends you one—doesn't make sense.
Does it sound enticing or did you smell the rat right away?
Smelled the rat.
I've seen it on Facebook. A couple of my friends are participating.

Yeah, this is a typical pyramid scheme. We're just seeing this on Facebook this time, instead of the old way of using letters. And Facebook allows it to spread a lot faster.
The biggest problem is it's illegal. Post office regulations are very clear about pyramid schemes. These gifts are being sent through the mail, and your personal information is posted on Facebook. Plus...
Also, it's against Facebook's terms of agreement. So there's the potential that Facebook, if they got wind of this, could block your account.
But it's so enticing, especially when you see your friends doing it and inviting you to join in.
The chances of getting 36 gifts are very slim. And what are you gonna get? A bunch of junk that you probably don't want anyways.
So if the exchange being illegal isn't enough to stop you from doing it, think about this: Do you really want your name and address, other personal information, all over the Internet? That in and of itself should make you think twice.
