Sarah wants to know how I can keep her daughters from uttering the construction, "'Me and my sister' are going..." somewhere, like, "'Maggie and me' are going to the grocery store." I told her I couldn't, in good conscience, stop her kids from leaving the house if they wanted, but I'd take a crack at discerning the difference between "me" and "I."
Sarah 想知道我可以怎麼做讓她的女兒們不要講出這種句構,Me and my sister are going...(我和我妹妹要去...)某個地方,像是,Maggie and me are going to the grocery store.(Maggie 和我要去雜貨店)。我告訴她,憑良心講,如果她的小孩想要離開房子,我不能阻止她們,不過我會試著區分 me 和 I 的差別。
You see, the problem is that by the rules of our grammar, you can't say "'Me and Maggie' are going." You have to say, "'Maggie and I' are going..." to the moon, let's say. "'Maggie and her sister' are going to the moon." "Maggie and me" can't go to the moon because "me" is a different kind of pronoun than "I." English pronouns are designed to slot into different parts of the sentence. For the first-person pronoun, we switch between "I" and "me," depending on the role that pronoun is going to play in the sentence. For example, "I" is always the subject of a sentence—the fancier term for this is "the nominative case."
你瞧,這裡的問題是,根據文法規則,你不能說 Me and Maggie are going(「我和 Maggie」 要去)。你得說:「 Maggie and I are going...(Maggie 和我要去...)」比方說去月球好了。Maggie and her sister are going to the moon.(Maggie 和她妹妹要去月球)。Maggie 和 me 不能去月球,因為 me 和 I 是不同種類的代名詞。英文代名詞是設計來插入句子的不同部分。第一人稱代名詞,我們會在 I 和 me 之間轉換,看那代名詞是要在句中扮演什麼角色。舉例來說,I 永遠是句子的主詞--比較複雜的名稱是「主格」。
So, what is the subject of a sentence? Simply put, it is the agent of a sentence—it's the noun that verbs! The "girls" strap in. The "rocket" launches. The "earth" shrinks beneath them. The "moon" grows huge. The "lander" detaches. The "Moon men" greet them. "They" dine on cheese.
那麼,什麼是句子的主詞呢?簡單來說,就是句子的主事者--做動作的那名詞!「女孩們」繫好安全帶。「火箭」發射。「地球」在她們底下漸漸變小。「月球」變得龐大。「著陸器」分離。「月球人」向她們打招呼。「他們」吃起司。
So, every time you want to say in the first person that you're going to perform an action, you use the subjective form of your personal pronoun. In this case, "I"—"I" is the subject of the sentence. "Maggie and me" is a compound, and an easy way to see whether or not you should say "I" or "me" is to take the other person out of that compound. While it may sound right to say "'Maggie and me' are going to get burritos," you wouldn't say, "'Me' going to get burritos" because you are not Cookie Monster. Unless you are, in which case, carry on.
所以,每次你想以第一人稱表達你要做某個動作時,你用人稱代名詞的主格形式。這種情況下,I--I 是句子的主詞。Maggie and me(Maggie 和我)是複合詞,而一個判斷你應該說 I 還是 me 的簡單方法,就是將另一個人從那複合詞中去掉。雖然講 Maggie and me are going to get burritos(Maggie 和我要去吃墨西哥捲餅)聽起來可能沒有不對,你不會說:Me going to eat burritos(我要去吃墨西哥捲餅),因為你不是餅乾怪獸。除非你是,那樣的話就繼續說 me 吧。
Under normal non-Muppet circumstances, "I" is always going to be the subject of the sentence. "Me" is always going to be the object. We'll cover "me" more in a subsequent episode, so don't worry about that too much right now. Keep this straight with the compound-breaking test and by this simple mnemonic: Imagine, if you would, a knight in medieval Europe, kneeling at the throne of his queen. She asks him if he is obedient and he replies, "My queen, 'I' am your loyal subject." You see? "'Percival and I' are your loyal subjects." Not "Percival and me," "I" am your subject—the subject of the sentence, the agent that does stuff. "I" do that, not "me."
在正常不是芝麻街布偶的狀況下,I 永遠都會是句子主詞。Me 永遠是受詞。我們在後面一集會有更多關於 me 的說明,所以現在不用太擔心。利用拆解複合詞的測試來不搞混 me 和 I,還有藉由這個簡單的記憶法:如果你願意的話,想像中世紀歐洲的騎士,跪在他的王后的王座前。皇后問騎士是否服從,他回答:「我的皇后,我是您忠誠的子民。(註一)」你懂了嗎?Percival and I are your loyal subjects.(Percival 和我是您忠誠的子民)。不是 Percival and me(Percival 和我),I 是您的子民--句子的主詞、做事的主事者。I 做的,不是 me。

註一:原文 I am your loyal subject. 的 subject 雖然是「子民」的意思,但這裡講者是把 subject 當「主詞」來表示幽默,告訴我們 I 是你的「主詞」。
