You know how music can change a scene's mood? If you pay close attention, it also sometimes tells the story. Here's how The Crown shows what characters are secretly feeling...
Hi, I'm Martin Phipps, and I'm the composer on the Netflix series The Crown. I'm here to talk to you about one of my favorite scenes from season four. So, I wanna play this scene with just the music and pictures so you can really hear what I was tryna do and hear the music in all its glory.
I started off this cue with this very simple, solitary vocal, which is tryna connect with Diana's loneliness. She's at this point in her life where she should be the happiest person in the world, marrying a prince, but actually she's feeling desperately isolated and lonely. So, this vocal motif is just like a little cry for help, a little cry in the dark from Diana.
Then this long string note that then falls down—it's a bit more sinister; it's kind of... We feel the pressure of the day coming in on her. And then, shortly after this, I bring in a—just quite delicately at first, but—this alternating wind and string pulse. And it's just, like, sort of making us think, "What are all these characters thinking? How are they feeling about this marriage?" And they all know it's a bad idea, but they can't quite bring themselves to say it.
And this pulse grows and grows and gets stronger and more oppressive, and kinda bearing down upon all the characters in this drama. It's like the establishment trying to push the whole wedding through, the determination that duty be done at whatever cost.
And after that, I bring in these low string chords, which are very Crown-esque. They're very... These alternating low string chords are a weapon in the arsenal of The Crown music. And this takes over pretty much completely the final sequence. It's the tragedy of the whole situation, for me. It's what we all know will become of Diana, how it'll play out, and how this is actually a tragedy unfolding rather than a happy day. I really wanted something fresh and innocent that symbolized Diana and this new character that had, sort of, blasted into this quite middle-aged world of the royal family.
But this scene is an all-new piece of music, and I think it brings together the different elements—the old and the new elements. So, it's kinda a coming-together, a mash-up of the two.
- 「非常美麗、令人印象深刻」- in all one's glory

And they all know it's a bad idea, but they can't quite bring themselves to say it.
