Have questions on what needs to be removed from your carry-on for screening? Here is what you should know before you arrive at the airport: When you enter the security checkpoint, you will receive instructions from a TSA officer on how to best arrange your items before it goes into the X-ray machine. You will be asked to remove personal electronic devices larger than the cell phone from your carry-on bag and place them into a bin with nothing placed on or under them.

Common examples of these devices include laptops, tablets, e-readers, and handheld game consoles. Any carry-on items need to comply with 3-1-1 liquid rule. If you're traveling with food or snacks in your carry-on bag, such as fruit, a health bar, or a sandwich, you may consider removing it and placing it in a bin. Removing food is not a requirement, but doing so may help the bag-check process. All removed footwear should be placed soles down on the X-ray conveyor belt or in a bin with nothing in, on, or under the footwear.

If your bag alarms during X-ray screening, a TSA officer will conduct a bag check. But please know that you'll be able to observe the inspection, and you're allowed to ask questions about the screening process.
