PHILADELPHIA E-LANE INITIATIVE APRIL 1, 2012
The city is going to pilot a new program called E-Lane that is a segregated lane on the sidewalk for folks who wanna text there, use their electronic devices while walking.
We're debuting on April 1, the E-Lane. We all know that many many people are using the sidewalk, looking at their iPhones, Blackberrys, other electronic devices, and they are quite distracted by those devices, bumping into people and other things happening...other things going on on the streets, so we wanna make sure that it's safe for everyone.
Every four hours a pedestrian is hit by a car in Philadelphia, so we wanna make sure that people can use their devices. They're on the sidewalk. Sidewalk safety is important.
Really? You're gonna only text in that lane? I think it's a good idea! Yes!
As a user, they'll keep most of these posers out of my way, and I can continue to walk and text.
I'm a severe texter and walker. So I don't know if I can quit on my own.
It's not safer, because I knew that I was gonna bump into anybody walking in the other direction texting.
As an individual I don't like it. But I guess they fit better for this public.
Whose sidewalk? Our sidewalk! Whose sidewalk? Protest text! Protest text. Boo... Get out of the E-Lane.
That will be the E-Lane, a first in any major city in the country. Once again reestablishing Philadelphia is a leader in the vanguard of public safety.
